Welcome to the Foundation for the Global Compact
Public-private collaboration is at the heart of the Global Compact. This defining characteristic must also apply to the initiative’s financing. Through the Foundation for the Global Compact, business is able to financially support the initiative and help ensure that the Global Compact remains a truly global, voluntary corporate citizenship initiative. All companies participating in the Global Compact are asked to make an annual voluntary contribution to the Foundation. These donations are vital to the initiative’s ability to provide a valuable framework for corporate change and innovation around environmental, social and governance issues.
Why contribute to the Foundation for the Global Compact?
A Growing Initiative
The rapid growth of the Global Compact – in terms of the number of stakeholders and scope of the initiative – naturally requires a larger budget to manage a wide array of projects intended to promote awareness of the initiative, deepen engagement by companies and other stakeholders, and help participants implement the ten principles and partnerships. Activities include:
- Managing over 5,000 participant relationships in roughly 120 countries
- Developing strategic resources to help with implementation of the principles – over a dozen new tools and publications were released in 2007 - 2008
- Strengthening capacity of more than 70 Local Networks
- Supporting leadership platforms such as Caring for Climate, the CEO Water Mandate and the Principles for Responsible Management Education
- Providing guidance and personalized feedback on Communications on Progress
Public-Private Cost Sharing
To date, the Global Compact Office has been supported mainly by Government funding. Now that the initiative has matured and is capable of providing increased value to participants, it is appropriate that the cost of supporting the Global Compact is more equally shared by the public and private sectors. The willingness of business to financially support the Global Compact will increasingly serve as an indication of the initiative’s value to participants – providing a strong argument for continued support by Government donors.
How much should companies contribute?
Suggested contribution amounts – listed below – have been set at levels that should ensure donations from companies of all sizes and geographic regions. The goal is for widespread, transparent sharing of annual costs by business participants. Of course, larger contributions will be most welcome and appreciated.
Following are suggested contribution amounts for companies based on annual sales/revenues:
| Annual sales/revenues | Suggested Contribution |
| USD 1 billion or more | USD 10,000 |
| Between USD 250 million and USD 1 billion | USD 5,000 |
